Predeal

Predeal is the northernmost city and resorts on the Prahova Valley and is situated approximately 140 km far from Bucharest, where the DN1 (E60) road passes from the southern slope of the Carpathians to the northern one. This is the Romanian town situated at the highest altitude (1033 m urban settlement), and is surrounded by five massifs: Postavarul, Piatra Mare, Bucegi, Baiului and Fitifoi. The climate is characteristic to the alpine areas, cool during summer (on average 15 C degrees) and cold during winter ( -5 C degrees average). Generally, in May-June the weather is sunny and stable.

The town lies in a sunny open spot, offering a great perspective towards the surrounding mountains. Founded in the proximity of a monk hermitage, a first wooden house was built in 1830 but started to develop after 1900. The name "Predeal" comes from the old Romanian "pre deal" meaning "on the hill". Predeal has become, due to its picturesque location and to the unpolluted mild climate, an important tourist centre. Permanent climatic resort and significant point for mountain hiking and winter sports, the town has a large range of hotels, guest houses and lodges in picturesque scenery. Restaurants, clubs, discos, music and theatre halls, swimming pools, sport grounds, modern cable ways, sport gear hiring centers, all are here, for the visitors. The air rich in ozone and the low air pressure is also a people magnet.

Predeal is starting point for hiking tours in the Bucegi, Piatra Mare, Postavarul and Baiului mountains. The Piatra Craiului and Ciucas mountains are also quite close. Interesting mountain trips can be done on marked routes: Trei Brazi- elevation 1,128 m, Clabucet - 1,450 m, Garbova - 1,350 m, Piatra Mare - 1,630 m, Susai - 1,350 m, Poiana Secuilor - 1,070 m, Tamina falls, etc.
