Abstract: The general objective of the project consist in evaluation of the impact of radioactive waste disposal practices on environment, population and operational personal and the optimization of these in order to assure the radiological safety in accordance with the national and international reglementations and recommendations. In this respect, is necessary to be developed a robust analyze on the operational and post-closure security for the National Repository for Radioactive Waste Baita Bihor, taking into account the recommendations comprised in the preliminary safety report, establishing the best practices in the EU and identification of solutions for radiological risk minimization . Must be underlined that operation of the National Repository for Radioactive Waste Baita Bihor started in 1985 despite the fact that was not fully equipped. Thus, after more than 20 years of operation, the equipments are degraded and the modernization became a high priority. This is very important especially in the context of Magurele VVR-S research reactor decommissioning activities which will generate important volumes of low and intermediate level radioactive waste to be disposed at Baita Bihor. In parallel must be assured the management of institutional radioactive waste from the Romanian territory and their final disposal at DNDR-Baita Bihor. In this context it is intended to be studied the following aspects : the barriers system which isolate the radionuclides from the environment, extension of the monitored area of influence of the repository for extracting supplementary informations on the disposed radionuclides behaviour, evaluation and optimization of the actual operational practices, mathematical modellation for cost-operational safety-post closure safety evaluation and development of a modernization strategy of the installation based on the obtained results. Taking in consideration the fact that National Repository for Radioactive Waste Baita Bihor is the only radioactive waste repository from Romania, and according to the National Strategy in the field will be so for the next 10 years, is of national importance to upgrade the operational degree from the point of view of the impact on environment, radiological safety and operational practices.
