Abstract: We propose in this project to use the In-Beam Fast Timing technique, recently developed at the TANDEM Laboratory of IFIN-HH, to obtain key quantities needed for the understanding of nuclear structure in different regions of the nuclear chart. Such quantities will be obtained by experimental determination of lifetime values for particular excited states in several selected nuclei. The main objectives are the investigation of E3 strength and the role of single particle configurations near the N=20 island of inversion (the 34P nucleus) and N=40 sub-shell closure (the 67Cu nucleus), the role of single-particle configurations in generating low-lying yrast isomeric states in the even-even N=80 Ba-Ce isotopes, and the investigation of particle-octupolar phonon coupling in nuclei like 65Cu or 90Zr. The proposed experiments will be performed at the TANDEM Laboratory of IFIN-HH using the mixed HPGe-LaBr3(Ce) array for fast timing and gamma spectroscopy. This in-beam fast timing device is, for the moment, unique in Europe and is the best suited for the research program proposed in the project. This experimental program will be performed in collaboration with research institutions from Europe and USA. The obtained experimental results will be interpreted in the frame of theoretical models like the nuclear shell model or the particle-vibration coupling model. If the project objectives are successfully reached in experiments performed at IFIN-HH with Romanian infrastructure, the immediate impact will be an increase of the international prestige and visibility of Romanian nuclear physics research inside the international scientific community.
