Abstract: The study of fusion reactions are among the first studies of nuclear reactions, but the behaviour of fusion cross sections near the Coulomb barrier is still difficult to predict. The difficulty increases when the projectile is weakly bound and can be dissociated in the intense Coulomb field of the target. In such cases incomplete fusion is probable: only a part of the projectile fuses with the target. This is a complex process that implies three interacting bodies and therefore it is difficult to model. The idea of the proposed exploratory research is to gain information about the incomplete fusion, when a part of the projectile fuses with the target creating an excited nucleus which fuses with the remaining part of the projectile. Such a study is comparable to the fusion with a target in an excited state. The idea of this study was suggested by recent theoretical works that simulated the whole reaction using the Monte Carlo procedure and different input parameters for the reaction. The present study will supply such parameters for the simulation. The present proposal is to investigate the fusion reaction of 194Pt with 6Li at the Tandem accelerator of the IFIN-HH. The choice of the projectile is motivated by the fact that 6Li is weakly bound and has a deuteron-alpha cluster structure. Furthermore, the deuteron is also weakly bound. The activation method will be used. The targets will be irradiated for a preset time and subsequently the (complete or incomplete) fusion products will be identified by detecting the gamma radiation emitted after their beta-decay. The possiblity of using the transmission method with a high sensitivity, when gamma rays emitted in a nuclear reaction are detected, will be investigated. This technical possibility will be tested only if the beam intensity can controlled and reduced to approx. 1000 pps. The results of this study will be interpreted by theorists and the conclusions published in literature.
