Abstract: The detailed description of the photon excitation and decay modes of the electric dipole (E1) resonances in atomic nuclei is one of the major challenges in contemporary nuclear physics. On one hand, it forms a cornerstone of microscopic nuclear theory. On the other hand, it is needed for precise photonuclear data evaluations with applications in astrophysics, reactor design and waste transmutation. Although both photon and hadron probes have been widely used to investigate the dominant Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) and the low lying Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR), their understanding is still hindered by an "excitation issue": systematically discrepant data on the GDR strength, and by a "decay issue": scarcity of particle and photon emission spectra measurements. The E1LEAD project addresses both challenges aiming to provide a detailed description of the E1 response in 208Pb through novel experimental & evaluated (g,1-4n) cross sections and average photoneutron energies in the 8 MeV to 40 MeV excitation range. A new analytical technique will be applied to a set of high resolution experimental data produced at the NewSUBARU Laser Compton Scattering gamma-ray beam facility. Statistical model evaluations will be performed on the new experimental data. The project is led by Dr. Ioana GHEORGHE (IFIN-HH), under the guidance of Prof. Mihaela SIN (UB). We are requesting ~48 kEuro of funding to provide the PL's position for two years as well as the necessary logistics and travel.
