Abstract: The rapid advancements in the field of ultra-short laser pulses produced by the chirped pulse amplification method have been followed, and at the same time supported by corresponding developments in the metrology and diagnostics. As our understanding of the interaction between intense laser fields and matter grows deeper, refinements of experiments begin to require specially tailored pulses from the point of view of spatial (near-field profile or wave front) or temporal characteristics. In turn, the metrology devices need to be able to properly characterize such customized fields. With this project we aim to cover this gap through the development and implementation of three devices at the ELI-NP experimental areas. The devices building, testing and data acquisition will be complemented with convolutional neural networks (CNN) and computational propagation code for measurement retrieval and prediction of the full pulse structure in focus.

Objectives:
General objective: development of advanced instrumentation for the metrology of ultra-short laser pulses, in view of a complete spatial-temporal-spectral reconstruction in near- and far-field.

Specific objectives:
(a) spatial characterization using a spectrally-resolved wave front measurement
(b) temporal characterization using an ultra-fast optical switch
(c) development of numerical and artificial-intelligence based algorithms for the full description of spectrally and spatially resolved pulse propagation and real-time pulse reconstruction in focus
