Abstract: The precise measurement of Radon (222Rn) and its daughters (progeny) concentration in air is a problem of high importance for the radiation protection world community, affecting both professionally exposed workers in uranium industry and public in general. In fact, the Radon and its progeny represent the primary cause of enhanced or natural ionizing radiation exposure. This project is intended to develop the first Romanian metrological facility for the calibration of the equipment used to measure the radon and its progeny concentration in air. The important results of the finalized project PNCDI II, Contract no. D71-102/2007: "Realisation of the Romanian radon primary standard system aimed to assure the national and international traceability of the measurements" (http://proiecte.nipne.ro/pn2/19-projects.html) will be used and developed in this new project. The main objectives are: the design and construction of a radon chamber, based on optimization studies and the best technical solutions available; assembling and testing the radon chamber at IFIN-HH; calibration of commercial measurement equipment and comparison with the results certified by the manufacturer; validation of the Romanian primary radon standard system by participating in an international comparison; drawing the necessary operational manual and calibration procedures to be included in the Quality Management System of the Radionuclide Metrology Laboratory from IFIN-HH; dissemination of the results (published articles, participation in national and international conferences and workshops, patent proposal for the new technical solutions, new calibration services offered to the users).
