Abstract: High resolution detectors are of extreme importance for numerous muography applications, from being able to non-invasively investigate the inner structure of dense objects, like scanning nuclear casks or nuclear drums in order to asses the condition of the nuclear spent fuel inside, or to search for hidden cavities or cracks in civilian or industrial underground facilities, like mines, tunnels, increasing the security by being able to estimate the stability of those structures in order to prevent accidents before it happened. The main OBJECTIVE of "High resolution detectors based on plastic scintillators with compact optical sensors for muon tomography applications" (TOMAHAWC) is to design and build an experimental model for a plastic scintillator detector that can be later developed into a prototype with high angular rezolution measurement capabilities for the directional cosmic ray muon flux in order to provide information about the inner structure of objects.
An experimental muon detector that uses SiPM devices, Front End Electronics developed in house and FPGA acquisition board will be assembled. The main characteristics of the device are high angular resolution, modularity, robustness, low power consumption. The performance of the detector and reconstruction code will be tested both in the laboratory at IFIN-HH and in the underground Micro Bequerel Laboratory from mina Unirea, Slanic-Prahova. A technical report regarding the performance of the electronic systems developed, the functionality of the detector and preliminary results obtained will be prepared. At least two articles will be forwarded for publication at an international journal that is in top 50% of all journals published in the research field of the proposal.

Objectives: The main objective of this project is to design and build an experimental model for a plastic scintillator detector that can be further developed into a prototype with capabilities to measure the directional cosmic muon flux with a high angular resolution, thus providing information about the inner structure of objects. It can be integrated into many muography applications, from the ability to non-invasively investigate the inner structure of dense objects, such as scanning nuclear casks or nuclear drums, to assess the condition of nuclear spent fuel inside them, to search for hidden cavities or cracks in civilian or industrial underground facilities, such as mines, tunnels, increasing security by being able to estimate the stability of those structures, in order to prevent accidents. Two different methods will be used, rods and scintillating plastic fibers, the best choice being selected after the first stage in order to be implemented.
