Improving the reliability and resilience of the data network for supporting the national contribution to the CERNs scientific program / CERN-CONNECT www.nipne.ro/proiecte/pn4/31-projects.html
Acronym: CERN-CONNECT Contracting Authority: IFA Number / Date of the contract: CERN-RO/S/2023_002 / Program: PN-IV-P5.9/Subprogramul 5.9.2/CERN-RO Project Manager: Mihnea Dulea Partners: Starting date / finishing date: 2023-10-01 / 2024-12-31 Project value: 1765000 RON RONAbstract: The general objective of the proposed project is the strengthening of the national participation in 11 CERN
experiments through investments in high tech networking equipment to be used in common by the CERN-
RO research teams. The investments are mainly motivated by the necessity of improving the resilience of the
connection to CERN through the renewal and upgrade of the network infrastructure currently used by the
CERN-RO projects, RO-CERN.net.
The main specific objectives of the project are the following:
O1. Improving the resilience of the connection to the National Research and Education Network (RoEduNet)
for the CERN-RO experiments
O2. Improving the performances of the local networks’ connections to the RoEduNet backbone.
O3. Improving network’s physical safety at the border of the Magurele Platform domain.
O4. Implementation and testing of a centralized system for monitoring the availability of the RO-CERN
network nodes
The project addresses for the first time the global needs of RO-CERN.net, identifies local weaknesses and
applies measures to implement minimal global standards regarding the uplink bandwidth and the quality of
the data communication service. The technical upgrades, together with the monitoring system implemented,
will make of RO-CERN.net a centrally coordinated entity and an irreplaceable tool for sustaining the unified
participation of Romania in the CERN experiments.
The state-of-the-art equipment purchased will be equipped with advanced software support that will ensure
balance and backup of the traffic in a High Availability configuration.
Partners will benefit of increased speed of access to data services, as well as the use of a modern network
architecture for the interconnection of computing systems, that will allow the implementation of VPNs for
secure transfer of data.
New software will be developed for implementing a monitoring system for querying the remote switches via
the snmp protocol.
The modernization of the RO-CERN.net will add an important step towards the upgrade of the national
research infrastructure in view of the participation to the medium and long term scientific research programme
conducted by CERN.
The improvements of the local uplinks’ bandwidts and of the quality of network services will reduce the
transfer time of experimental data between Romanian teams and CERN or CERN partners, for analysis and
interpretation, thus speeding up the process of research.
The project will facilitate the cooperation between its participants and the CERN community, RoEduNet, other national
and international research institutions and organizations, ITC companies/manufacturers, through the transfer of technical
information and know-how in the field of the advanced communication technology
