High Power Laser System

The Extreme Light Infrastructure Nuclear Physics project is one of the most prestigious research infrastructures in the world due to its unique state-of-the-art equipment.

Implemented by the National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering Horia Hulubei (IFIN-HH), ELI-NP has been designated by the Nuclear Physics Collaboration Committee of the European Science Foundation (NuPECC) as the major facility in the Nuclear Physics Long Range Plan, having successfully finalized the commissining of the High-Power Laser System (HPLS), the most powerful laser in the world.

  • The most advanced research facility in the world in the field of photonuclear physics, a new interdisciplinary research field which brings together, for the first time, high-power lasers and nuclear physics.
  • The nuclear physics pillar of the Pan-European Distributed Research Infrastructure ELI-Extreme Light Infrastructure
  • The largest investment ever made in scientific research in Romania, co-financed by the European Commission and the Romanian Government from Structural Funds via the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
  • Implemented by the Horia Hulubei National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH), which generates almost 10% of Romania's scientific output.
